The Intoxicating Dance
In the last post Fitzhugh managed to escape from the locked room within The Wicked Cinnabar with the help from an unexpected ally. And with some help from the slime sentinel, Fitzhugh defeated the hermit and Minerva the blacksmith before they finished their intoxicating dance.
Is there a Crowd of People Watching?
This is the first question I asked the oracle to set up the scene. No, but... it appears there was but they probably assumed it was just two drunk people dancing for no real reason.
Is the hermit and Minerva drunk enough to have a disadvantage? No.
Do our heroes have a surprise round? This question I asked with an advantage giving that the villains were focused on their task and that they thought Fitzhugh was still locked up. And of course, they would have no reason to think there was a creature like the slime sentinel on Fitzhugh's side. The result to the question was: Yes, and... they also have advantage on their first attack.
"Good. She didn't even go through my pack yet." Fitzhugh rummaged through his bag and pulled out his blowgun. His short sword, sheathed, propped up against the wall by his bag. "Now," he looked up at the creature made entirely of a green slime-like substance, "can you speak or at least understand me?" The green human-shaped form nodded its head without saying a word. "Quickly, we don't have much time."
The outside chanting and stomping of feet can be heard from behind the door of the smithy. "Now when you open the door," Fitzhugh loaded a dart into his blowgun, "charge the blacksmith and take her out as quickly as you can." The creature nodded and brought his arms to his chest in the shape of an 'X" as a sign to show loyalty to his master. "I will go after the hermit. Remember, this must be quick before we attract a crowd."
Moments after the door opened, the green and faceless creature slammed into the blacksmith. She let out a long hiss as green slime melted through her leathers and burned her flesh. "Why did you..." the hermit choked on his own words as he coughed up blood. The dart from Fitzhugh's blowgun buried itself into the side of the hermit's neck.
Fitzhugh unsheathed his blade as he sprinted to the wounded hermit. The blade of the short sword slipped effortlessly through the hermit's torso as he spat blood into the air. The blacksmith rolled and crawled as she avoided the slime-like crushing limbs of Fitzhugh's guardian. Once she found her footing she began to take off towards an alley next to The Wicked Cinnabar. A dart whistled as it flew by her head. A moment of relief entered her mind as that dart bounced and skipped on the ground in front of her.
That moment was simply a moment. A circular hole opened up where a face would be on the slime-like creature. And before the blacksmith could turn a corner to hide within the buildings, green liquid spew from the faceless void of Fitzhugh's guardian. It burned through the air before dumping like a bucket of water onto the briefly hopeful blacksmith. She was dead before she could even scream from the acid that rained down upon her.
End of Combat Reports
After the swift combat I rolled up on the treasure tables that I assigned to both the hermit and blacksmith.
Florian the Hermit: Ceremonial Staff (2 hand, +1 dmg); Miscellaneous Item (Drawing); Worn Item (Mask)
Minerva the Blacksmith: Smithy Hammer (1 hand); Valuable Material (Black Pearl); Treasure Item and Trait (Encoded Signet Ring)
I also awarded Fitzhugh with 3 XP because I felt he did indeed overcome an impressive challenge beyond his expected ability. And with that Fitzhugh is now level 2.
What's Next?
There are some questions I want to discover after this session. Such as are the Mask and Encoded Signet Ring related in someway? What is the Drawing of? How much is the Black Pearl worth? And what is Fizthugh going to do about the bodies, the slime sentinel and his clan The Withered Shrimp?
Curious how many times did you roll for that combat, if I were to guess from the bolded words maybe three times? My action scene was it about the same maybe a little longer than what you just did but I had 20 different roles, just gauging if I'm getting too far in the weed because I like to roll dice.
ReplyDeleteSo I had the surprise round for the heroes. Each rolling once. Then three more rounds after that. The first round one enemy was killed then the last enemy was killed on the third round.
